Sleep… Where art thou

When I was younger (really up until my college years), I could sleep through anything!  Talking, moving furniture, roommates studying, TV’s on, and the infamous (my mom loves to tell this story), when I was young, she used to be able to vacuum in my room while I slept.  Something must have happened during my sophomore year of college, because I started become a lighter sleeper as time went on.

Present day- If someone in the house wakes up and starts shuffling around, I wake up, no matter how early.  My room is right above the garage in our house, and I have two doors (one that leads to the other side of the house, and one is connected to stairs that go down to the kitchen/laundry room/garage area).  For some reason I hear EVERYTHING!  My mom’s husband wakes up early (say 4:30-5) and goes into the basement to work out, I’ve been waking up at 5:00 AM in the morning to the sound of the weights being put back on the bench press, or gym mat.  This is 2 floors below me!  With my door closed!  I can guarantee he’s not throwing the weights or dropping them from waist height, yet I’m still somehow hearing this and waking up.  My alarm goes off at 6ish every morning anyway, and if I sleep until then I’m getting 6-7 hours of sleep a night (I LOVE my sleep, I really function better off 8+) so waking up 45 + minutes earlier (where I don’t fall asleep again easily) really interrupts my needed beauty sleep.  During the week it’s frustrating because then I drag at school, on the weekend if I don’t have somewhere to be, it’s not quite so bad.

When Mr. Right is around I usually have a very hard time sleeping too, I wake up to any movement, or if he shuffles his feet from the TV to the couch, I’m awake.  I find myself needing to nap during the day a lot because I am so drained of solid sleep time.  It usually takes me at least 30 minutes to fall asleep, which I don’t find to be unreasonable, and the TV in the background is usually soothing to me.  When I hear Mr. Right snore, or my phone beep from a message, or the dog scratch on the carpet, I wake up… usually for good!

Mr. Right has suggested using some type of sleeping pill, but I feel that I don’t usually have a problem GOING to sleep, it’s that last hour+ that I need, where I’m somehow too sensitive to noises that I wake up.  I’ve tried earplugs (Mr. Right does tend to snore :) ) but those usually fall out by the wee hours of the morning.

Any suggestions!?  I know there are times where I’m thankful to be such a light sleeper, if someone is crying or hurt, or if someone were to break into the house (especially with Mr. Right being deaf, I really need to be the ears in the group), but it’s killing me right now!  I end up tired, frustrated, grumpy and that’s not really how I’d like to start my mornings.  I need to be alert and on my toes, and of course, well rested.

Book Review- Hunger Games

Between scrapbooking for Mr. Right’s newest niece or nephew (due March 17th, but the shower was two weeks ago) and planning for upcoming Connecticut Mastery Tests, it’s been a busy life inside and outside of school.  About two weeks ago I started reading Hunger Games, recommended by one of my coworkers.  I absolutely love reading,… Continue Reading

My Great Analogy-

I keep seeing comical posts on Facebook or Pinterest along the lines of being jealous of others people who get engaged (some are quite negative, but humorous at the same time).  I was just in the kitchen about 20 minutes ago thinking about this.  I have so many friends who are getting engaged, married, having… Continue Reading

My Latest Addiction

Just last weekend, I was on The Island visiting Mr. Right, as I do every other weekend (we alternate weekends) and the best part was celebrating his birthday!  One of the great parts of visiting Mr. Right is that not only is he emotionally very close with his family (2 brothers and their wives), but… Continue Reading
